Black Metal Evolution Of The Cult Rar

The musician known as Ayloss has been busy over the past few years. Perhaps most known as the creative force behind Spectral Lore, Ayloss has been crafting black metal and dungeon synth records which are staggering when considered all together. Since the beginning of 2020, Ayloss has made somewhere around 14 releases under 7 different project names. These projects are similar in a macro sense, as they fit under a black metal or dungeon synth banner, yet when analyzed further, the various works of Ayloss offer listeners new landscapes to ponder. Much like a mystic seer, each of these records is a living world which has been crafted using vibrant palettes.

The Great Mist Within is the debut full-length release from Ayloss's new project Auriferous Flame, itself an expansion to a three song EP self-released this May. The full length is seeing a release through True Cult Records, and by all intents and purposes feels like a proper introduction to the project. Inspired by the sound and ethos of black metal of the 1990s and 2000s, The Great Mist Within retains the ferocity of inspirations like Rotting Christ and Bathory while updating it to fit within the space of 2022. With some songs reaching past the 10 minute mark, The Great Mist Within is a long form record built upon a solid understanding of the music and its history. Songs like "Ancient Corridors" radiate depressive tones before exploding into a galaxy of fire and light. The Great Mist Within is a record that could have been recorded in 1997, but makes much more sense as a record of today. It is both reflective and focused on the present with all of the momentum in the world.

Rotting Christ are the undisputed kings of the scene and the only band from this list to have achieved vast international fame. While they began as a grind band, their sound gradually became more black metal on their demo Satanas Tedeum and hinted at the direction they were going in with the follow-up, Passage to Arcturo.

Kawir began as a fairly ordinary Greek Black Metal act. In fact, Necroabyssious from Varathron was the original vocalist on their first two releases, the Eumenides EP and a split with the Japanese band Sigh. After his departure, Therthonax was keen on infusing Greek mythology and folk melodies into the bands brand of black metal to the point where he decided to sing in Ancient Greek.

Emerging with a demo in excess of 50 minutes, Zephyrous provided more in one release alone what others in this list provided during their whole careers. Entrance and Wandering on the Seven Zones will keep content those who enjoy their Greek black metal with a heavy dose of synths and melody. After a split with Vorphalack (an okish act from Athens), Zephyrous drifted away from the style to play something completely different to their roots.

Hi Philippos, thank you for the kind words! We typically write about traditional heavy metal, but we also write about the intersection between heavy metal and extreme metal. The Hellenic sound, with those beautiful melodies that you touched on, very much lies at this intersection which is why we decided to cover it. However, the American scene is much more standard black metal so therefore we will not cover it.

While it is important to point out that national socialist black metal remains a minority element within black metal, signs of far-right extremism similarly contaminate related musical genres such as goth, industrial and neofolk. The latter incorporates elements of traditional European folk and reconstructed medieval instruments, exemplified by such bands as Fire, Sol Invictus and Death in June. The latter take their name from the Night of the Long Knives, when Hitler arranged the murder of his rivals in the Sturmabteilung critical of his policies. Nazi imagery, including the death head worn by the SS, is a consistent theme on their album covers, as are such Germanic runes like Algiz and Odal that were appropriated by neo-Nazis into their blood-and-soil id
